wynter wonderland: the course

Wynter Wonderland is an 8-week virtual course that expands on and critiques Western concepts of “the human” and emphasizes the decolonization of knowledge with a Hip Hop lens, with a focus on Black women who are active participants in the culture. It will be facilitated by Dr. Kashema Hutchinson and Chinyere Okafor.

This interdisciplinary course integrates scholar Sylvia Wynter’s concepts and Sister Souljah’s classic novel, The Coldest Winter Ever, to reimagine identity beyond societal stereotypes, recognize Hip Hop as a form of cognitive justice and cultural resistance.

By incorporating Wynter’s focus on race, gender, and colonial power structures, the collective will explore how Hip Hop empowers Black girls to challenge dominant narratives, express their experiences, and foster a sense of community.

The course will be held virtually on Wednesdays from February 2 – March 23, 2026 from 6pm-8pm (ET). Sessions will not be recorded.
